Is The Arms Race on a Large Scale Today?

The world will never be the same again. Of course, the past has been marked by huge tragedies due to human actions. Do we remember the great wars that marked the eras? We remember them; there were many, both before and after Christ, but the most memorable are those where atomic weapons were used. The world will never be the same again because man has become more perverse in his actions. Pride, the search for dominance over his fellow men, his natural wickedness, his greed, his selfishness, etc., are the cause.

The atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki by the United States of America in August 1945 during the Second World War led many countries to think differently. From this, we understand that a country cannot be great or a rival of the United States if it does not have its own uranium enrichment facility as a means of nuclear deterrence. No country has a scientific monopoly, that is all so-called civilized nations can be as well versed in science as any other. In the name of all this, the Soviet Union, the then adversary of the United States, began its uranium enrichment a few years later.

It did not stop there, Great Britain, France and China followed suit. So much so that atomic weapons were being developed that the year 1962 was marked by a huge nuclear missile crisis between the United States and the Soviet Union. Aware of the impending catastrophe caused by the proliferation of nuclear weapons, a first treaty was signed in 1970, the essence of which is the prohibition between the signatories of transferring nuclear missiles to a non-nuclear state. From what has just been said, it appears that not only is the manufacture of nuclear weapons by a state an instrument of force, but also of deterrence.

Although other agreements have been signed on the proliferation, prevention, and use of nuclear missiles, this does not prevent their use, and peace and life on earth are still threatened. Even today, we are witnessing an increasingly accelerated arms race. An arms race occurs when one state manufactures and/or accumulates weapons for reasons of superiority over another. This definition is of the classic kind and refers rather to the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cold War, which were in competition in the manufacture of nuclear weapons.

Today, the arms race has a completely different twist, because it is not only a means of competition, but also a means of deterrence. The arms race does not only refer to nuclear weapons, but also to the military capacity in general of a state to possess and/or develop weapons of all kinds, such as chemical, biological, conventional weapons, etc., and to achieve this, one must be very versed in technology. The circumstances and fear are often at the root of the arms race. Practical examples of this are the Cold War and the current situation.

The Second World War was preceded by an arms race, notably with the rearmament of Germany, the military expansion of Japan, to name a few, and various eras thereafter have become theaters of arms races. When the United States entered the war during the Second World War, no country had known if it had such military power. In fact, the arms race is done in secret and is accompanied by secret maneuvers. Although countries that have satellites and sophisticated cameras have enormous advances in terms of surveillance, this does not prevent the secret development of weapons of mass destruction.

Today, a quick internet search is enough to list the countries successively that have more nuclear warheads, and those that do not have them are hurrying to get them. The agreements on nuclear weapons and other calibers were falling apart, and those that remained were useless. Almost all European countries and various other so-called civilized countries everywhere else are increasing their military or defense budgets, military maneuvers are taking place in secret; are we on the brink of a third world war? Remember that human technological prowess will make things easier and more terrible.
